The Observatoire Volcanologique du Piton de la Fournaise of the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris is looking for a post-doctoral fellow to improve the characterization of seismicity associated with the Piton des Neiges and Piton de la Fournaise (La Réunion).

Tasks

The work will involve developing and using new machine learning methods to improve the detection and localization of earthquakes in La Réunion. The detection of micro-earthquakes is essential for understanding the geometry of faults at depth, magmatic transport in volcanoes and the mechanisms behind seismic swarms. However, in a volcanic environment, the complexity of recorded signals, the high seismicity rate and their low signal-to-noise ratio often mask the link between observed seismicity and migrating magma. These methods have been explored in the context of localized eruptive crises. However, for the global study of seismicity on La Réunion, and therefore when activity is recorded at different scales, methodological obstacles persist.

Type of contract

Duration: 24 months

Where: Based at the Observatoire Volcanologique du Piton de la Fournaise

Profile required: PhD with a specialization in geophysics, physics or applied mathematics. A good knowledge of Python programming is desirable.

Description

The post-doctorate will last 24 months and will be based at the Observatoire Volcanologique du Piton de la Fournaise (OVPF), a station of the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris in La Réunion. The main missions of the OVPF are research into the functioning and evolution of volcanoes, monitoring the activity of La Fournaise and disseminating knowledge. The post-doctorate will also involve missions abroad and in France as part of our current collaborations and conferences.

We are looking for PhDs with a specialization in geophysics, physics or applied mathematics. A good knowledge of Python programming is desirable.

Funding is requested within the framework of the ERDF program, and applications will be selected on the basis of the criteria set out in Action sheet 1.1.9 “Reinforce RDI efforts by recruiting young graduates”, available at the following URL: https://regionreunion.com/IMG/pdf/v2-_fa_1.1.9_renforcer_l_effort_de_rdi_par_le_recrutement_de_jeunes_diplo_me_s.pdf
Among the specific selection criteria set out in this sheet, it is mentioned that people who have spent part of their school and/or university career in La Réunion will be given an advantage.
