The Grotte de Trabuc in southern France is not only a natural wonder, but also a long-standing seismological observation site, which has been part of the national Epos-France network for the past fourteen years.

Last June, teams from Géosciences Montpellier and OREME successfully completed a mission to modernize and improve the scientific equipment in the Grotte de Trabuc. Thanks to their efforts, the seismometer in place for over 15 years has been refurbished to guarantee the continuity of seismic observations crucial to understanding the region’s geological phenomena.

During this expedition, several notable advances were made:

  • replacement of an ageing digitizer by a latest-generation model, ensuring greater measurement accuracy
  • installation of a new recorder to optimize seismic data collection
  • repair of a critical fault, enabling immediate resumption of recordings
  • creation of an educational presentation for visitors, to popularize and share current knowledge of the geosciences and seismic activities in the Grotto.

This mission involved an exemplary collaboration between CNRS, the University of Montpellier, Epos-France, OREME and Grotte de Trabuc. The seismometer’s activities can now resume in full swing, paving the way for new discoveries and a better understanding of the geological mysteries of the Grotte de Trabuc.
